Looking for a New Dentist?
The relationship between the dentist and the patient is unique and important. Unique in that it is a very intimate relationship with a professional. After all, how often do you allow someone to put their fingers in your mouth? It is a vital relationship because you need to be able to trust that your dentist has your best interests at heart. Oral health is not only about the health of your teeth and gums; it can also affect your overall health. You and your dentist must be a good fit, and there can be varying reasons you may choose to find a new dentist.
New to the Area
One of the more common reasons a person may want to find a new dentist is relocation to a new area. There are many things that can change in your life when you move to a new place, including your health care providers. It can be challenging to know who to go to for your dental care. Ideally, you will find a dentist in whom you can put your trust – one who you can feel comfortable with and who you know will answer your questions in a way you can understand. It may also be important to find one that is conveniently located for weekday appointments; that is, near work, home, or public transportation.
Your Current Dentist is Retiring
Dentists who love dentistry’s art and craft and help patients manage their anxiety will more than likely keep their practice going well beyond the average age of retirement, or at least as long as they can. Still, that day will come for taking down the shingle and closing the door one last time.
In most instances, you will have fair warning that your dentist is going to retire. You can ask for a referral if he or she does not provide one for you. Occasionally, a retiring dentist will sell the practice to another dentist. This new person may or may not be a dentist you like. If you do like the new dentist, no problem. If you do not, then you start a search for the one you do want.
Dissatisfaction with Your Current Dentist
There can be any number of reasons why you may be dissatisfied with your current dentist. You have the option to find a new dentist, one in whom you can put your trust and with whom you can feel comfortable. Some individuals may avoid going to the dentist because they do not like the one they have. This is not a good reason to let your oral health slide. You do have the option of finding another provider, so do not be afraid to begin a search.
Looking for a New Dentist
There are a few things to keep in mind when you are searching for a new dentist:
- Read online reviews to find out what other people have to say about their dentists
- You can often tell the moment you step through the door if the space is welcoming and pleasant.
- The right dentist heads up a good team, and that can be obvious from the start.
- You should feel comfortable with the dentist.
- Your dentist listens to your concerns and answers your questions to your satisfaction.
- The new dentist has all the necessary credentials and is current with licenses.
You have the right to ask about the dentist’s background and training. Hopefully, you will find a great dentist on your first try. If you do not, continue your search until you find one with whom you feel compatible.
