Why Adults Choose Dental Braces for Teeth Straightening

Did you know that adults make up nearly half of orthodontic patients? Yes, older people are choosing dental braces to straighten crooked teeth and get a healthy and attractive smile. What used to be a rite of passage for children is now the treatment of choice for adults who want to correct crooked teeth.

Adults have varied reasons for selecting braces to fix their teeth.  Some feel they can finally afford braces, others see the professional benefit of improving their smile, and a growing number are becoming aware of the health benefits of straight teeth.

When are braces the recommended teeth straightening treatment?

Although orthodontics is most often the best way to correct crowded teeth, it is not the only way. Other cosmetic methods may be used if the problem is not too severe.

Orthodontics is the treatment of choice for more severe cases of misalignment and when the goal is to keep the teeth natural and unaltered. Teeth that have been aligned by braces have a better bite pattern that helps with chewing and keeps the teeth from wearing.

In severe cases, teeth may be so crooked or close together that it is impossible thoroughly clean them or floss. Teeth that cannot be cleaned are prone to gum disease and cavities. Once the teeth are corrected, they will stay healthy because they can be properly cared for.

Dental braces have come a long way.

Modern braces are more comfortable to wear and easier to maintain. The days of metal wires are over. Contemporary devices are usually made out of ceramic brackets and wires, making them less noticeable than ever before.

The newest option is “invisible ” braces, like Invisalign.  These clear, removable, transparent matrices move the teeth to a particular position and are changed every two weeks until the ideal placement is achieved. These braces can be maintained with proper home care and, without wires or brackets to replace, require less time in the dental chair. Invisalign is most effective in treating mild to severe cases of overcrowding and gaps between teeth. Invisalign would not be the best option for fixing severely overcrowded teeth.

Remember, beautiful teeth are healthy teeth!
